Computers for Schools, co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the TelecomPioneers, refurbishes computers and related equipment donated by governments and businesses. These computers are distributed across Canada to schools, libraries and registered not-for-profit learning organizations.
In addition to coordinating computer donors and recipients, CFS oversees numerous repair and refurbishing centres throughout Canada, where surplus computers are cleaned, refurbished, and prepared for delivery. Workshops are staffed by recent technical graduates, students, and volunteers, including current and retired telecommunications professionals.
After refurbishment the computers are distributed based on student population to the provincial school districts, with a portion allocated to public libraries and other not-for-profit learning organizations.
The CFS program in Newfoundland and Labrador has grown rapidly since 1994 and in 1999 was incorporated as a separate not-for-profit corporation. This organization – Provincial Information Equipment Recycling and Refurbishing Enterprises or PIERRE – has an extensive Board of Directors to manage the program with representatives from the three sectors – government, corporate, and voluntary.
